Pondicherry is a union territory which is situated on the Coromandel Coast at a distance of 160 km from Chennai. There are four regions included in this territory which are Pondicherry, Yanam, Karaikal and Mahe. Yanam is a district of Andhra Pradesh, Karaikal is situated at 132 km from Pondicherry and Mahe is located in the district of Kerala.

Amongst other options as to how to reach Pondicherry, one can also travel by train. The nearest railway station is called Villupuram. It is situated at a distance of 36 km west of Pondicherry. From Villupuram one can easily reach cities like Rameshwaram, Coimbatore, Madurai, Trivandrum and Chennai directly. Since the train line to Pondicherry becomes narrow gauge from Villupuram, one can opt to travel to Pondicherry by road from here.

Pondicherry is very well connected by road with major cities of Karnataka, Tamilnadu, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala. There are frequent interstate buses plying every fifteen to thirty minutes from Chennai. Thus, traveling to Pondicherry is hassle free and convenient.
